Meet the Blue Truck
History: A Working Life
This truck's story begins long before its restoration. It was originally purchased in 1984 by Zac's dad from Christensen Truck Sales in Pleasant Grove, Utah, making it a part of the collection longer than Zac himself. It was one of seven identical trucks, all with factory blue cabs and red Omaha standard stake beds, that had been used in a roofing company's fleet. The evidence of its hard-working past was clear, with a glove box full of staple holes.
Zac's dad needed a stake bed for his summer work, and for years, that's what the truck did. He always dreamed of installing a dump bed, but it wasn't in the budget at the time. Over the years, countless loads of tree limbs and other materials were tossed in and hauled out by hand. Finally, by 2007, it was time. Zac rebuilt the flatbed, where rust had taken its toll, and the long-awaited dump was installed.
Present: A New Identity
The decision to install the dump soon led to another: fixing the rest of the truck. A full, frame-off restoration began, but with a catch. The truck is no longer a "D" series and no longer a small block. The rust had been so extensive that the only original metal left on the cab is the dashboard itself; all the rest of the sheet metal was too far gone to reclaim.
Today, the truck's working days are mostly behind it. It is used for the occasional parade, a scrap metal load, and the annual leaf removal, but it is no longer in regular service.
Future: The Final Details
The little things of this restoration are still waiting to be buttoned up as time allows.
